Becker & Hickl is a company specializing in the manufacture of TCSPC equipment, picosecond diode lasers and detector modules.
Becker & Hickl, founded in 1993, realized the patented principle of time correlated single photon counting, which made TCSPC more than 100 times faster than existing devices. BH has developed a multidimensional TCSPC process that registers photons not only depending on the signal period but also on other parameters such as experiment time, wavelength or spatial coordinates.

Becker & Hickl develops picosecond diode lasers with wavelengths from near-UV to near-infrared. All B&H pulsed diode lasers are powered by a simple +12 V power supply or from a USB port on a PC or laptop.
Other features include high repetition rates, short pulse durations, stable timing and power characteristics, and extremely low electrical noise. All driver electronics are integrated into the laser module. All B&H diode laser modules are directly compatible with TCSPC modules.
Detectors
Becker & Hickl offers a wide range of detectors, including photomultiplier tubes, hybrid photodetectors, single-photon avalanche diodes for visible and IR, as well as multichannel and multispectral detectors.
The detection range covers wavelengths from UV to IR, and the time resolution ranges from 20 ps to several 100 ps. The detectors are suitable for recording fluorescence decay by TCSPC, FCS, FLIM, and PLIM methods. TCSPC modules work with any photon counting detectors, including superconducting NbN detectors.
TCSPC FLIM
SPC modules can be used for classical and multidimensional fluorescence decay applications, as well as for fluorescence lifetime visualization, multi-wavelength FLIM, simultaneous fluorescence and phosphorescence lifetime visualization, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, and single molecule experiments.
The module has three parallel TCSPC / FLIM channels with a common reference channel on a single PCI-express board. Alternatively, the module can operate with four channels with absolute photon synchronization. The modules offer high temporal and spatial resolution, high peak count rate and synchronization stability.
Laser scanning FLIM microscopes
Fluorescence lifetime imaging systems utilize TCSPC's multidimensional FLIM technology in combination with fast laser scanning, confocal detection or multiphoton excitation. DCS-120 systems are available with a variety of inverted and upright microscopes.
Advanced versions of the DCS-120 system are designed for multiphoton excitation with Ti:Sa lasers and femtosecond fiber lasers. The system also works with tunable excitation sources.
Fluorescence lifetime measurement systems
All Becker & Hickl TCSPC detectors and systems are characterized by ultra-high temporal resolution, high count rates and throughput, and extremely low background fluorescence. Scientists, physicians, researchers and other users can perform high-performance studies with our equipment.
The instrument consists of a fiber probe, interchangeable tip, excitation laser, detector, and TCSPC system. Excitation radiation is delivered by a picosecond diode laser to the input fiber of the probe. The fluorescence light returned from the measurement object is transmitted to the detector via the output fiber of the probe. Fluorescence attenuation curves are recorded by the Simple-Tau 150 TCSPC system.
Components for system integration
A wide range of accessories to improve the results of a photon counting experiment, such as control modules, optomechanics or implantable fiber probes for in-vivo applications.
Trigger modules are available to obtain an ideal signal. Various cables, adapters, attenuators and signal converters are available to the SPC modules to ensure efficient signaling of lasers and detectors.
